Indian mathematician, academic and science popularizer Yashwant Kanetkar has died. He has written a number of books for school children on basic numeracy skills.Yashwant Kanetkar was a professor of mathematics at Delhi University. He passed away last week at the age of 96 after a battle with the common cold. All these books are currently available in their original format or as e-books.He was born on 25 May 1915 in Rajkot, Gujarat to Dr D.K.M. Kanetkar and Miss Sushila Kanetkar. He was the first of 5 siblings, having 3 brothers and one sister. His early education started at the Government Primary School, Kathor (1917 - 1924), followed by St Joseph's College, Rajkot (1924 - 1928).Kanetkar came to Delhi University for his graduation in Mathematics in 1936. The Mathematics Department at Delhi University had reached a high degree of excellence during this period, which became the foundation of many academic careers since then.. In 1942 he completed his Doctorate from the University of Cambridge. The subject of his thesis was "The Mathematical Theory of the Maxwell Equations, Part I".. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1973, and a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences in 1990.Kanetkar received many awards and honours throughout his career including: Knight Commander Grand Cross (KCMG) Order of Merit (OM) from Queen Elizabeth II as well as her father, George VI as well as her son, Prince Philip. In 1999 he won India's highest civil award – Bharat Ratna - for his contribution to scientific research and scientific education in India.
